Moontrekker 40: DNF

It doesn’t always work out as planned and that is a lesson that endurance sports can teach, staying humble and accepting temporary failure.

Night racing clearly requires additional focus. After 8km and a good starting pace, Tyler and I were taking relays leading our group of 3, we passed a bunch of people and were finally in the right group of people with similar pace to keep pushing ahead.

As I turn to Xav to check he is behind me, I lose my footing. A huge pain runs through my ankle, I hear a cracking noise, I am in agony jumping on my other leg trying to shake off the pain.

First, I think the race is over, then after a few minutes, adrenaline and a warm ankle, we keep running to check point 1, 2. Tyler and Xav are supportive and help out at each checkpoint by bringing food and seeing how I am doing as I talk to first aid and get ankle bandaged up.

Check point 3, we are now at 26km and it’s time to quit, the pain is too great the injury is just going to get worse otherwise.

I sadly see Xav and Tyler pushing ahead to Lantau peak. Congrats to them for finishing in a good time and braving the weather, steep and skippy rocks on the way up and down the peak.

The plan for today: rest, ice, physio…
