Day 18: the long way down
Down 2,500 meters to base camp in 1 day. We are waiting for Dustin’s expedition to take their final decision on whether they are moving up or down. His expedition is a group of 3, one of them, Ben, is a wounded war veteran in his thirties – he has his shin fused to his ankle after going through dozens of surgeries. He started climbing as a way to get out of depression and war trauma. This was his last of the 7 summits and giving up on a summit push is a huge setback for him and his team. First option is to get Dustin and Ben climb up while the other 2 would stay and support the push from camp 3, the second option is for everyone to go down, this is what is decided.
We take our final pictures on this beautiful day. It is so beautiful that we almost regret not trying another summit push. There is a lot of wind on the ridge which is not a good sign though.
We load our packs to the maximum for the final push to base camp.
6Pm: on the way down, trying to play with the sleds, turns out its a total failure
8pm: dinner break at Camp 1. An expedition team brings us they freshly cooked extra dinner pasta, a real treat!
9pm: after a long rest at camp 1, we restart for the final push. The sun is still up on some sections of the mountain
11pm: heartbreak hill, the final step before base camp
1130pm: we have arrived at base camp after a long long day
