Day 2: stuck in Talkeetna – bad weather, no flying

It has been a good day, lot of preparation work done. Unfortunately we are unable to fly out! It has been raining all day and visibility is not good enough for planes to take us to base camp.

Early morning we attend the briefing from Park Rangers at the Ranger station, finish preparing gear and gather our crevasse rescue ‘systems’ (small pieces of rope, webbings, ascenders, carabiners, harnesses). Late morning, we rehearse important mountaineering knots and enjoy a team lunch before going through an expedition briefing with Colby Coombs, the owner of AMS.

Later in the afternoon, we practice self-rescue in case of crevasse fall and rope ascension with Chelsea, while hoping that Talkeetna Air Taxi identifies a clearing and takes off for the glacier. The sun is slowly coming out in Talkeetna after 2 days of rain and we could get a flying window tomorrow. But now it is raining again…

If we look on the bright side, it is one more night in a comfortable bed to get some good rest, able to talk to Sarah, getting updates on Oscar’s new discoveries, games and additional teeth,  and most importantly send each other all the possible love & support before 3 weeks without connection.
